Map

10 July 1980. NAU air photography.
Positive cropmarks. Rectilinear enclosure.
D. Edwards (NAU), 16 June 1982.

March-June 2009. Geophysical Survey
Magnetometer survey on proposed line of the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Site H14).
The eastern part of this survey area coincided with a group of predominantly north-east to south-west aligned fragmentary cropmarks visible at TG 2020 1433 (see below).
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains.
See report (S9) and NHER 63378 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 May 2019.

April 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A series of undated rectilinear ditches are visible as positive cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S6). A possible enclosure has been identified, centred on TG 2000 1385, as well as a series of possible field boundaries, extending into the fields to the south and to the northeast, which has led to the site being extended by a further 265m to the south and 160m to the northeast.
These ditches appear to represent a possible rectangular field system, measuring at least 600m by 560m, with several internal divisions, or parallel linear ditches, within it, which may represent field boundaries.
The features are not visible on historic maps of the area, but appear to be parallel in alignment to the south-western field edge, which makes up the north-western boundary of Horsford Manor, and it is therefore possible that they relate to post medieval activity. A medieval seal matrix (NHER 25902) has been recovered from the field immediately to the west, however, and it is therefore possible that the features are medieval to post medieval in date.
However, the presence of a possible Roman enclosure and linear features on a similar alignment, approximately 400m to the south west (NHER 36405) suggests that these features may in fact be Roman in date.
E. Bales (NMP), April 2010.

The central grid reference for this site has been altered from TG 199 137 to TG 1997 1391.

September 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Assessment of additional aerial photographs revealed further probable traces to this field system to the north (S7-S8). The site is now centred on TG 1997 1391. Including a continuation of the track or droveway that runs through Manor Farm. Another possible trackway following the same alignment is also recorded running through the area of NHER 26413. A double ditched boundary following a similar alignment to the modern field system, also visible on (S8), was omitted from the mapping.
S. Horlock (NMP), 28 September 2010.

April 2012-April 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Block 19).
The area examined coincided with the two parallel north-north-east to south-south-west aligned mapped at TG 1982 1448 but there was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains. The only feature identified was a north-to-south aligned ditch of probable post-medieval date.
See report (S10) and NHER 49742 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 May 2019.

May 2014-January 2015. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey on proposed line of the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Area H14).
This survey of the area to the south of the strip examined in 2009 also previously examined strip also revealed no evidence for surviving remains associated with the north-east to south-west aligned fragmentary cropmarks mapped at TG 2020 1433.
See report (S11) and NHER 63378 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 July 2019.

April-September 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Field H13).
A trench placed across the two parallel cropmarks as TG 1982 1448 found no evidence for surviving associated sub-surface remains.
See report (S12) and NHER 49742 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 May 2019.
