Map

No mapped location recorded.

Hellesdon is listed in (S1) as a location where "Palaeolithic drift" implements had been found by both H. H. Halls and W. G. Clarke prior to 1919. According to (S2) Hellesdon was also noted as a Palaeolithic findspot on a distribution map produced prior to 1922 (S3). These finds are also noted in (S4)-(S7) and on (S8), although in all cases this is only a reference to (S1). As Wymer states in (S5), the nature and present whereabouts of these finds remains unclear.

It is possible that these artefacts were so-called "sub-crag" flints (most of which are now regarded as naturally-fractured flints), although this seems unlikely as findspots of such objects are listed separately in (S1).

It is possible that these objects were recovered at one or more of the sites in Hellesdon at which Halls and Clarke are known to have recovered other prehistoric worked flints. The Norwich Castle holds material from three of these sites, which are as follow:
Halls' Site 12/Clarke's Site 29 (now in Norwich; NHER 9527; NWHCM : 1924.83.12 (Halls); NWHCM : 1926.32.29 (Clarke)).
Halls' Site 45 (NHER 7860; NWHCM : 1924.83.45).
Clarke's Site 24 (exact location unknown; NHER 8099; NWHCM : 1926.32.24).
