Around 1958. Stray Find.
Found in load of gravel (possibly from Lowestoft) on Holmes Housing Estate, Gorleston (the area around TG 520 030):
1 prehistoric flint scraper. Donated to Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1961.264). Information from (S1).
This object was originally recorded as a Palaeolithic ?Acheulian flint scraper. It is almost certainly the same object as a thin ovate Mousterian or earlier Upper Palaeolithic 'handaxe' from Gorleston that is described by J. J. Wymer in (S2). This was recorded as being from the Holmes Housing Estate and held by the Norwich Castle Museum. The implement itself is described as slightly rolled, with battered edges and stained. According to Wymer it is more of a leaf point than a handaxe, making an Early Upper Palaeolithic date the most likely, particularly given the lack of any known pre-Devensian deposits in the area. See drawing (S3).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 8 April 2014.
