Summary

Two concentrations of prehistoric pot boilers, fragments of Roman pottery have been found during field walking. This was the site of a small settlement during the medieval period, and field walking has recovered medieval pottery, medieval roof tile and part of a medieval quern.

Winter 1978. Field OS Great Fransham 64. Detailed fieldwork.
Large amount of medieval pottery including Grimston, and roof tiles, 2 Roman greyware sherds.
Pot boiler concentrations; context 6 at 8859 1299, diffuse spread about 48m north to south, 30m east to west. Context 8 at 8840 1290 abuot 18m north to south, 14m east to west, disappearing under track.
Worked flints and lava fragments.

This site is recorded as Med 2 in (S2). (S2) notes that the scatter of sherds suggests that the settlement was probably surrounded by a block of arable land, bounded by common pasture and demesne woodland. No certain documentary evidence for this settlement has been found, but it may be the messuage referred to in a mid 15th century document.
