Map

1954-1957. Stray Find.
Found in garden of 1 Bush Road, Upper Hellesdon:
Mesolithic-type flint implements.
Neolithic flint industry, represented by a 1 chipped axe, 1 core, scrapers, flakes etc.
Flints from this site are held by the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1958.32.9).
Information from (S1) and (S2).

The nature of the flints held by the NCM is somewhat unclear. A number of potentially Mesolithic pieces are listed in (S3), including 1 large tranchet axe, 2 cores, 27 blades/flakes and 2 microliths. This list clearly includes a number of the pieces initially identified as Neolithic. The tranchet axehead is described in greater detail in (S4). The assemblage was examined by R. Robins (NCM) in 2007 and listed as comprising:
1 tranchet axe, 2 scrapers, 2 miscellaneous retouched pieces, 2 blade cores, 12 blades/blade segments and 44 flakes. It is noted that there is scant evidence that this collection is actually Mesolithic and that most pieces could well be Early Neolithic.
See copy of notes in file.

Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 13 May 2014 and 6 October 2014.
