Full Description
1973. Fieldwalking.
Scatter of unglazed and green-glazed (?Grimston) medieval pottery sherds around spring.
1976. Medieval brick and building material - causeway?
1979. Stray Find.
In long narrow field marked on OS map, in area of previous finds:
1 prehistoric unfinished quartzite pebble macehead (ploughed up slightly to south of where ring was found). See drawings (S1) and (S2). Originally dated as Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age but subsequently re-identified as Mesolithic by J. J. Wymer in 1984. It should however be noted that these objects are not considered to be closely dateable, having been found in both Mesolithic and later prehistoric contexts.
1 Neolithic polished greenstone axe. Perhaps broken at butt and reworked. See drawing (S3)
1 post-medieval gold betrothal ring at TF 9325 1332, just south of small pond [which suggests grid reference given is incorrect].
Full details in file.
E. Rose (NAU) 9 February 1990. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 20 June 2013.
1990 or earlier. Metal detecting find.
15th century French jetton. Identified by S. Margeson (NCM). See file.
A. Rogerson (NLA) 26 March 1991.
Before September 2004. Metal-detecting.
Surface finds while metal detecting:
1 Late Neolithic shafthole implement (N.B. previous finds of stone axe and unfinished shafthole implement from same site). See drawing (S4).
1 Roman pottery sherd (greyware).
20 medieval/post-medieval pottery sherds (1 Langerwehe stoneware, 16 glazed Grimston and 3 LMT).
36 post-medieval pottery sherds (assorted stoneware).
Stone object identified by P. Robins (NCM) and pottery by A. Rogerson (NLA). See list and descriptions in file.
A. Rogerson (NLA) 31 May 2005. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 4 August 2014.
