Map

September 1974. Building Recording.
A complex group of buildings between Guildhall Street and Raymond Street which are 19th century recasings (partially in Gothic Revival) of older buildings. The complex consists of Point House, which is a two-storey building with a Welsh slate hipped roof and rendered walls, and 38 Guildhall Street which is an early 19th century brick and flint building. Point House originally consisted of two separate buildings, amalgamated in the late 19th century. The western building originally had a lower floor level and the height of the walls was raised at some point, possibly in the early 19th century. Later in the 19th century the level of the ground floor was also raised to correspond to the height of the east building, requiring the ceiling to be raised as well and thus making the first floor redundant. The early origins of 38 Guildhall Street are indicated by a stop-chamfered beam on the ground floor.

1974.
Field notes by NARG in file, add little to the above (S2). Photograph in parish file with Thetford set has annotation suggesting the archway is 15th century although RCHM report calls it Gothic Revival.

May 1978. Demolished.

January to April 1991. Watching Brief. (link road for NAU) SEE NHER 5747 FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
Groundworks for the construction of the southern portion of the Thetford Link Road between Castle Street and Guildhall Street were monitored intermittently. An undated pit and remains of a rubble-filled basement or cellar of a building which previously fronted Raymond Street were encountered during groundworks in a small area between Guildhall Street and Raymond Street. These are likely the remains of this building and/or NHER 12111.
See (S3) for further details.
H. Hamilton (NLA), 9 October 2008.
