Summary

In 1961 a cone-shaped heap of large flints, with a fired clay cap on top, was cut through in this area. This was found to be sitting on carstone, and dark material stretched for some distance to either side. This mass had several discrete layers of different clays and sand, though some burnt material recovered is thought to be 19th century in date.

Around 40' ft (12.2m) away from sewer trench in which Early Saxon bowl found (site NHER 1529) a cone-shaped heap of large flints with a fired clay cap on top was cut through. This sitting on carrstone. Base around 30 inches (76cm) below surface. Burnt carrstone found inside. Dark material, ?soot stretched for some distance either side. In this layer and just outside flint and clay dome were some burnt twigs which looked very modern ?19th century. In mass several clearly defined layers of different clays and sand, apart from flint. Part of Early Saxon urn from 30 inches (76cm) at side (see record NHER 1529). [2]
