Summary

In 1978 fieldwalking in advance of the development of the A10 and in 1988 as part of the Fenland Survey recovered a general scatter of Roman pottery and tile as well as prehistoric worked flints. Two concentrations of Roman pottery and tile were identified. Metal-detecting between 2004 and 2012 recovered a Roman glass vessel sherd; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins and Middle Bronze Age, Roman, Middle/Late Saxon and medieval metal objects. The metal finds include a Middle Bronze Age pin; Roman brooches, a finger ring, pin and bracelet fragments; a Middle/Late Saxon strap-end and a medieval copper alloy strap fitting and seal matrix.

Three flint flakes.

January 1987 or before. Found with metal detector.
Copper alloy seal matrix. Oval with facetted stalk rising to circular loop on reverse. Intricate design shows two figures within double architectural frame of 14th to 15th century style, one figure profile, one full face - ?Annunciation. Traces of inscription but now illegible. 22mm x 18mm diameter. S. Margeson (NCM) suggests inscription is (AVE MARIA) GRA (CIA) PLENA and is 14th century.

January 1987 or before. Found with metal detector.
Bronze brooch, oval frame and bezel surrounds a dark green glass 'stone' with steep central point. Frame bears faint traces of gilding. 34mm x 26mm diameter. Thickness to point of stone 11mm. Dated at NCM to 4th century who confirm stone is glass.

18 February 1988. Fenland fieldwalking. Field southwest of Sam's' Cut Drain.
Weathered soil, young cereal.

Roman sherds, flints.

Context 5. at 6145 9638. HLG 13.
Concentration Roman pottery, sparase, moderate in places. Some tile. Top and east side sandy ridge. 135m north to south x 70m east to west at 6.1m OD.

Context 6 at 6138 9618. HLG 14.
Concentration sparase Roman pottery, tile sparse to moderate. On east side ridge in gravelly loam soil. Must be associated with context 5 55m northeast to southwest x 40m northwest to southeast at 5m OD.
