Full Description
'Another large tumulus, now gone, near Lord Leicester's garden in the same park'.
Marked as Howe Hill on Ordnance Survey.
R.R. Clarke (NCM).
Among sources given by Clarke it is difficult to tell which refer to this site and which to NHER 1779.
(S1) says only 'a mound near the stables of Holkham Hall' also 'human remains found', checked by E. Rose (NAU).
(S2) 'tumulus near church'.
(S3) 'Human bones and pieces of armour' in tumulus' a little distance from the church'.
(S4) calls tumulus.
(S5) 'Danish tumulus'; called Hadehogate 1234 Haddehowe 1306 = Hadda's Hill, perhaps Howe Hill.
See NHER 1781, a Saxon cemetery, perhaps the same site, as assumed by (S6).
A. Lawson (NAU) February 1975.
1988 to 1989. At spot marked by R.R. Clarke (NCM), in wood, two items found with metal detector about 7.3m (8 yards) apart.
Side knobs of group V cruciform brooch (S7), with iron rivet; fragment of wrist clasp (S8).
Drawn and photographed in file.
A. Rogerson (NAU) 21 February 1989.
