Summary

Aerial photographs taken in 1980 showed the earthworks of a moated site at this location. The landowner states that the gravel pits on site were for the building of the Fakenham Road and Bryant and May planted the poplar trees, presumably for matches, during the agricultural depression of the 1930s. He had no knowledge of any story of a moat here.

Possible moated site and ancilliary earthworks.
D. Edwards (NAU) 20 March 1981.

Landowner states gravel pits on site were for the building of the Fakenham Road and the poplar trees were planted by Bryant and May, presumably for matches, during the agricultural depression of the 1930s. He had no knowledge of any story of a moat here.
E. Rose (NLA) 21 July 1993.

Owners wish to insert small pipe to drain excess water from field. Limited ditch cleaning will produce small amount of spoil necessary to cover pipe to allow for stock/vehicle crossing over ditch. Operation to be watched by member of Wensum Valley Project. Works in probable area of old quarrying.
H. Paterson (NLA) 3 July 1995.

Site very wet after prolonged rain. Owner hopes to lay a pipe in a ditch and cover with soil/hardcore. This would not involve ground disturbance.
H. Paterson (NLA) 24 April 1998.

1998. Field Observation.
This suggested earthwork was examined and proved to be too irregular for a moat, with pits, some water-filled, and ridges haphazardly distributed under scrubby vegetation. The Tithe Map shows a gravel pit described as being that of the Surveyors of the Highways; this appears to be the origin of the earthworks.
