Summary

This 16th century jettied building has two storeys and a plastered facade. A mullioned and transomed 15th or 16th century window was found in the rear wall in 1988. In the south room of the house some of the beams are painted with red and black chevrons. Local legend says that this was the gatehouse of the Franciscan friary (NHER 2036). More recent investigation suggests it was an inn or pilgrim's hostel.

In south room of house a spine beam and tiebeam across stack, each with single hollow chamfer and rollmoulding to each angle, painted in black and red chevron (compare painting at Church Farm Spixworth, Thorpe St Andrew Old Hall). Local legend that this was the gatehouse of the Franciscan friary. It stands on the old road blocked by the friary.
