Summary

Fieldwalking as part of the Fenland Survey recovered a scatter of flints across the field mostly in the centre and four concentrations of prehistoric worked and burnt flint, including one concentration of Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flint blades and flakes.

Feltwell Fen. Harrowed and planted, but well weathered field, good conditions.

Context 1.
Odd flint flakes etc. over field. Mostly from central gravel area where quantity of natural flint hampers recognition. FWL AC.

Context 2. Site FWL 2 (TL 6477 8802).
Sparse scatter of pot boilers and couple of flints, on island of coarse sand with little gravel (sample collected). About 33m x 20m at 0.3m OD.

Context 3. Site FWL 3 (TL 6481 8798).
Sparse scatter pot boilers and odd flints. Pot boilers not collected. On sand island with little gravel. 20m x 10m at 0.3m OD.

Context 4. Site FWL 4 (TL 6495 8772).
Sparse scatter pot boilers and couple of flint blades on flint gravel island. 35m x 10m at 0.3m OD.

Context 5. Site FWL 5 (TL 6495 8772).
Sparse scatter pot boilers plus some flints particularly at northwest extremity of spread. Recorded as continuous though an apparent fall off of material in middle of long axis. On sand island containing little flint gravel. Maximum 120m x 20m at 0.3m OD. Worked flint assemblage comprised flakes and blades of possible Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date.
