Summary

Fenland fieldwalking here in 1983 recorded the presence of an earthen mound. This mound was interpreted as either a breakwater from the Sea Bank or as a saltern mound. Excavations on site in 1999 revealed part of a probable brine-settling tank of pre medieval date; with an infill of briquetage, and two post medieval sherds.

E. Rose (NLA) 1 September 1999.

October-November 2023. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with improvement works at West Walton Fire Station, including the construction of a new training tower and a small extension to the main fire station building.
No archaeologically-significant remains were observed, although it should be noted that natural geological deposits were not exposed by these works. A significant depth of made ground appeared to be present at this location and as a result it is unlikely that the groundworks impacted any underlying, undisturbed deposits.
No finds were recovered.
See report (S3) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2023.11).
P. Watkins (HES), 17 March 2023. Amended 27 April 2024.
