Summary

A moat was shown at this location on a tithe map of 1832 and the 1957 6in Ordnance Survey map. The moat has now been partially infilled but the area in which it is situated was fieldwalked in 1991. This work recovered a variety of medieval pottery sherds from glazed and unglazed wares. The exact date of the moat has not been determined but is probably either medieval or post medieval in date.

Map

Moat.
Shown on 1957 6in Ordnance Survey as rectangular enclosure moat with entrance to west enclosed by short flanking ditches, and crossed by footpath; two ponds in interior; eastern annex with south arm W-shaped, straight East arm, but no north arm.
The 1832 tithe map is identical except that it shows the north arm of this enclosure running to the centre of the east arm of the main moat, not to its northeast corner as Ordnance Survey might imply.
R. R. Clarke (NCM) described this as ancient monument 75, but there is no record of it ever being scheduled.
E. Rose (NAU) 8 February 1982.

January 1991.
Farmer stopped from dumping in south projection of central dividing arm.

23 January 1991. Casual collection within moated island (west enclosure). Very poor conditions.
Medieval unglazed: one body sherd, one base, one ribbed handle from jug.
One medieval glazed base.
Finds held by NCM.

Two small trees on bank. West arm water filled to south of entrance, dry to north, approximately 102m long. North arm infilled. East arm infilled to north, dry with scrub in centre, wet to south.
