Summary

Fieldwalking in 1985 by the Fenland Survey recovered a general scatter of medieval pottery sherds from this field, as well as noting four concentrations of medieval material, and some Roman pottery sherds and a tile fragments. Metal detecting on this site also recovered a number of Middle Saxon to post medieval metal objects.

3 April 1985. Fieldwalking on winter cereal in well weathered soil.
Context 1: Odd medieval sherds from field. WPA AQ (S1).
Context 2: [1]. Concentration medieval pottery sparse, bone sparse, shell abundant. post medieval rubbish (abundant towards west fading to moderate eastwards) on edge of roddon, 37m east to west x 17m north to south 2.7m OD. WPA 10 (S2).
Context 3 [2]: Concentration medieval pot sparse, locally moderate, bone and shell sparse. Some of the material from Context 3 has been reidentified as Late Saxon pottery. Not much post medieval rubbish. Possibly on edge of large Walpole roddon. 20m northeast-southwest x 19m. 2.4m OD. WPA 11 (S3).
Context 4 [3]: Concentration medieval sherds moderate, sparse bone, abundant shell, not much post medieval debris. ?on edge of Walpole roddon. 30m north to south x 35m east to west. WPA 12 (S4).

Context 5 [4]: Medieval coin.

All part of context 1: Bronze medieval buckle with rectangular loop, cylinder round pin rest, attachment plate folded round frame, pierced hole for pin, two rivet holes at open end.
Bronze medieval strap end, space-plate, with crescentric arms, and cast acorn terminal.
Bronze medieval belt-stiffener, rectangular, rivet hole at each end; ribbed in centre.
Lead lozengiform openwork fragment, with central rib, from ?pilgrim sign?
Early post medieval bronze buckle frame, D-shaped, with lug at each end of pin bar.
Identified by J. Davies and S. Margeson (NCM).
