Summary

In 1960 human remains were recovered from the site of the former Cluniac Priory (NHER 5748). Due to their proximity to the priory, they likely date to the medieval period.

May 1960. Casual Find.
Human skeletal remains of probable medieval date were found at the Cluniac Priory (NHER 5748), in the grounds of Abbey House immediately north of the modern entrance to the Priory, at the junction of Minstergate and Water Lane.
The bones were found in a mass but some skeletons were laid regularly. 56-61cm (22-24in) below topsoil.

Information from (S1)

The assemblage, which includes at least five skulls, was encountered while digging a trench for sewer pipes. The area in which the bones were found is to become a private housing estate.
