Summary

Three post medieval lime kilns survive here despite the fact that one was very poorly built. These are now a haven for local wildlife with very active rabbit barrows underneath and roosting bats inside.

One has its chutes narrowed, another is atrociously built.

All three still in good condition, except for a hole in one, and undermining by rabbits. One kiln has a lime plaster skim on the inside.

This site is noted in White's Directory 1854 (S3) and in Kelly's from 1892 to 1875 (S4) and it is marked on 25ins O.S. maps 1905 (S5). However its shape on these maps is the same as it is today, so it is likely that chalk extraction stopped here before this map was made.
