Full Description
1975.
Cropmark of rectangular enclosure lying diagonally across field, with a linear mark parallel to the north and possibly another
to the south, although this may be vehicle tracks. -
E. Rose (NLA).
1976.
Photographs reveal southern marks are part of a long trackway crossing modern field boundaries and roads.
E. Rose (NAU), 1976.
January 2022. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Possible multi-phase linear ditch features (see above) are seen as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S5). The features most likely relate to a series of boundary ditches, possible field boundaries, rectilinear enclosures and a trackway. It is possible that the features may be Iron Age-Roman in date. Further elements of the site may have related to former medieval- post medieval field boundaries. The features are in close proximity to a possible Neolithic long barrow (NHER 64295). Cropmarks of post medieval field boundaries recorded on the readily available historic maps (for example S6) have not been mapped as part of this project. Geological cropmarks are visible across the area and its possible that some of the features maybe natural in origin. The monument polygon has been extended.
J. Powell (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 13 January 2022.
