NHER 12911 (Building record) - 15 King Street

Good Georgian house, four bays two storeys and dormers. Archway. Red brick. Listing (S1) says that inside are carved beams and a ?16th century six-light window.

1993 revised listing confirms this, upgrading to II*. Ovolo moulded hall window in courtyard. Kitchen occupies site of hall, having beams with ovolo mouldings and bar and tongue stops. House dated as early 16th century. 18th-century panelling also noted.

"Early C16 hall house, refronted in mid 18th century. Red brick with plaintile roof. 18th-century facade to King Street of two storeys and dormer attic in four bays. Round-arched carriage entrance to left. Three flush-frame mid-18th-century sashes to right and four to first floor, all with glazing bars and segmental gauged skewback arches. Timber bracket eaves cornice. Gabled roof with three dormers, the outer two with pediments, the central one with a segmental pediment. South stack shared with 15A [NHER 12910], internal gable-end north stack. Main entrance is in range to north of rear courtyard. Two storeys in five first-floor bays and dormer attic. In centre is a six-panelled door protected by a large timber doorcase with a pediment. The upper pair of door panels are glazed. To left is the former hall window: six lights, transomed, the mullions ovolo-moulded. To right of door are two mid-18th-century sashes with flush frames and glazing bars. Five similar, but slightly younger, sashes to first floor. Moulded timber eaves cornice. Gabled roof with two flat-topped dormers fitted with 19th-century sashes. Rebuilt ridge stack over door. At west end is a two-storey and dormer attic cross wing, one bay of which protrudes into courtyard. This in gault brick. Sashes. South gable in red brick of multiple dates. West front is whitewashed. Gabled roof with internal south gable-end stack.
Interior: Ground-floor east room in street range has large-framed panelling and an egg-and-dart cornice. Big mid-18th-century architrave to panelled door. Present kitchen occupies position of original hall lit by the hall window: sunk quadrant bridging beam with tongue and bar stops. Similar bridging beam in room to right of door, and C18 large-frame panelling. West end mostly late 20th-century in character, the roof of two tiers staggered butt purlins and collars. Roof of courtyard range similar but with canted collars."
