Full Description
26 March 1984. Fenland Project fieldwalking.
Along southwest edge of sand island spreading up towards crest but not far across it.
Large spread of flints and pot boilers. Density not consistent; pot boilers not everywhere and general spread of flint denser in places, could in fact be several sites. Max dimensions 180 NW/SE x 60m NE/SW.
Two Mesolithic microliths were recovered and it is likely that the majority of the other pieces were also of this date, including cores, many blades, a denticulate, several serrated blades and two truncated pieces. Several pieces were however of Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date (including a plano-convex knife, a scale-flaked knife and a barbed and tanged arrowhead) and it is therefore likely that at least some of the less diagnostic pieces were also associated with this phase of activity.
A single sherd of Roman pottery was also recovered.
For further details see project archive (S1) and final publication (S2). Finds now held by Norwich Castle Museum.
R. Silvester (NAU) 26 March 1984. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 4 September 2013.
1989 to 1990. Further fieldwork during Fenland Evaluation Project.
Auger traverse conducted.
Dossier prepared for HBMC, see copy (S1) in file.
