Full Description
Prehistoric finds from two fields west of Townfarm Barn.
1983. Stray Finds.
Found by [1] when picking potatoes:
2 Mesolithic chipped flint axeheads. See outline sketches (S1).
Identified by J. Wymer (NAU) and compiled by W. Milligan (NCM).
Information from (S3). Discoveries noted in (S2).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 5 June 2013.
1984. Stray Finds.
Found in roughly the same area as the 1983 finds:
1 Mesolithic light flint axe made from small blade core and 1 plunging flint flake from blade core.
Identified by J. J. Wymer (NAU) and compiled by W. Milligan (NCM) 16 November 1984.
Information from (S3).
Not explicitly dated, but presumably Mesolithic; which is the only period listed on (S3).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 5 June 2013.
26 February 1985. Fieldwalking.
Various prehistoric worked flints recovered during fieldwalking, the majority found in the northern half of the field (within and beyond the area of the earlier finds):
1 Neolithic polished flint axe. See sketch (S4).
1 triangular sectioned flint adze (S5), 1 small flaked axe, 1 crude multi-platform core, 27 flakes and 1 blade.
These objects are presumably Mesolithic or Neolithic, although no dates are listed. The thin blade is probably Mesolithic. The majority of the flakes are crude undiagnostic pieces although 3 are soft-hammer struck axe thining flakes.
Two pot boiler sites were also identified within the field (TF 8475 1280 and TF 8462 1270).
See file for full details and location sketch.
E. Rose (NAU) 30 April 1985. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 5 June 2013.
18 April 1985. Fieldwalking.
Found to south of earlier discoveries:
3 prehistoric broken flaked axe roughouts, 2 crude cores and 1 bifacial axe-like punch.
No suggested dates recorded, but presumably Mesolithic or Neolithic.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 5 June 2013.
May-June 1985. Further fieldwalking.
Several objects from general area of site:
1 prehistoric large single-platform flint core, 1 single-platform blade core and 6 flakes.
No suggested dates recorded, but presumably Mesolithic or Neolithic.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 5 June 2013.
1993. Fieldwalking.
1 Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flint axe. See drawing ().
Several undatable prehistoric worked flints, including scraper, flake and a crude core.
See file for identifications by P. Robins (NCM) and drawing of axe (S6).
W. Milligan (NCM) 16 August 1994. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 5 June 2013.
