Summary

Metal-detecting and fieldwalking between 1981 and 2017 recovered Neolithic worked flints; Iron Age, Roman and medieval pottery sherds; Roman brick and flue tile fragments; a Roman quernstone fragment; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; a post-medieval jetton and token and undatable, Iron Age to Roman and Middle/Late Saxon to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include undatable casting waste; an Iron Age brooch; an Iron Age/Roman bead; Roman brooches, a bracelet fragment, finger ring, key, furniture fitting, spoon and figurine; Middle/Late Saxon strap-ends; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval bell, seal matrix and thimble; medieval to post-medieval bell and copper alloy vessel fragments and a post-medieval crotal bell and harness mount. The Roman finds were concentrated in the centre of the field and the amount and type of material recovered suggests that this was part of the Roman town at Walsingham and Wighton (NHER 40825).
