Map

1953. Stray Find.
In digging foundations in connection with oil pipe line.
Two, possibly three, Early Bronze Age burials from pit grave.
Fragments of two pots (one an anomalous B Beaker), plus other undecorated sherds, also possibly from the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age Beaker period.
Also found was an Early Bronze Age copper alloy flat, riveted dagger, which may have been associated with the above finds.
See drawing of pottery sherds (S1) and photograph (S2) of dagger. The dagger was apparently also drawn by T. H. McClough (NCM) in 1971 (the location of this drawing is unknown).
Finds (including dagger) held by Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1953.169).
Information from (S3).
For full details, including report on human skeletal remains, see published article (S4) (in which drawing (S1) and photograph (S2) are reproduced). These discoveries were also noted in (S5) and local press article (S6). The Beaker sherds are amongst those described and illustrated in (S7).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 3 September 2018.

In (S1) R. R. Clarke (NCM) commented that he thought that this was part of a much larger cemetery, associated with a number of barrows in the immediate area. The site was disturbed by the construction work at RAF Marham in 1979, before archaeological excavation or evaluation could be carried out.

In 1944 [1] claimed that there were 3 ring ditches about 3km southeast of Marham Church, placing them roughly near this site.
E. Rose (NAU). Information from (S2).
