Summary

Metal detecting in this area during 1984 recovered an unusual post medieval lead object. It was cast with a boat-like picture or the letters 'HD' on the front and it may have been part of bale seal, a token or a counter.

Spring 1984. Metal detecting. Former parkland.
Token or bale-seal. Lead flat on back, device like boat? or HD joined on front. ?Part of bale seal; or token or counter (suggested by S. Margeson (NCM)) as cast rather than stamped. Some 18th century Edinburgh tokens have similar motifs such as initials of merchant who struck them or a device, but these usually double-sided.
