Summary

This area is marked as Gnattington Green on a map produced in 1631. This suggests it may be the site of Gnattington deserted medieval village. Pieces of medieval pot, tile, quern, shells and metal working debris have been recovered. An alternative interpretation is that this is the site of a medieval fair.

Map

Five roads or tracks meet on (S1).

June 1961.
Early medieval sherds, fragments of lava, tile, oyster shell, etc. found, also iron slag and foundations of chalk and flint.
Possibly vill of Gnattington, or a fairstead.
Interpretation as vill from C.H. Lewton-Braine.
Interpretation as fairstead from D. Young.

(S2) gives documentary evidence for Gnattington being in this area, streching south to the Docking road, with its manor house at East Hall. But how much of the area was built-up, and how much the area of Gnattington Manor? The area south of East Hall is marked as Gnattington Green on (S1).
E. Rose (NAU), 25 July 1984.

Other sites suggested previously for Gnattington are NHER 1607 and NHER 1609.
