Summary

This is the site of a post medieval lime kiln, the remains of which still survive. Today the kiln forms an important bat roost and hibernation site.

Kiln marked on Ordnance Survey map.
Alderford Common is now a jungle; almost impossible to locate site accurately but a circular depression with young trees
growing out could be the top of a buried lime kiln.
Visited by E. Rose (NAU), 15 June 1978.

Marked as lime kiln on (S1).

However NIAS in 1977 report that kiln is still there with tunnels accessible.

Confirmed that kiln is still intact; some damage by children, is to be fitted with grilles etc to protect bat colony. September 1986.

1995.
Bat entrance now fitted apparently above former access shaft in one side of circular mound of brick rubble surrounding bell of kiln. Bell is embanked well up above surrounding land.

15 May 1997. In dense woodland.
Steep mound with deep depression in top. On one side of this, a shaft with concrete surround and metal grille across entrance. An important bat roost/hibernation site.
