Summary

It is recorded that in 1865 a sand mound was excavated somewhere in the Broomhill area, exposing what was though to be a Neolithic flint mine. At a depth of approximately 24m a tunnel was exposed, within which a flint pickaxe was found, fixed into a stag's antler. This may be a confusion with early excavations by Greenwell at Grimes Graves, but it appears to be reference to a different site.

1865.
According to (S1) in 1865 a sand mound was excavated in the Broomhill area. At a depth of 80ft (24m) a tunnel was found containing a pickaxe of flint fixed in a stag's antler.
This may be a confusion with Greenwell's excavations at Grimes Graves, but (S1) does though mention this excavation separately from his description of Grimes Graves.
This excavation was previously noted under the record for the Botany Bay pit (NHER 5643), but there is no evidence to suggest that it took place on or near this site.
