Map

Before 1939 . Boughton TF 700 012.
Skeleton found in a sitting position when chalk quarry was started. 'See Bronze Age torc close by'. (NCM
card). However there is not and never has been a chalk quarry at TF 700 012. The nearest quarry is at TF 700 008 just over the boundary into Stoke Ferry and it was here that the site was marked on NAU maps in 1974. The 'Boughton torc' is in fact from Stoke Ferry also. However (S1), describing the Roman well site (NHER 4418) refers to a skeleton sitting
up by a workman 'in the vicinity' (see file under NHER 4418). Does this mean that the quarry concerned is in fact that in which sites NHER 4417-8 lay? However note very similar entry by R. R. Clarke (NCM) under site NHER 4412 which suggests there is considerable confusion among these sites.
E. Rose (NAU), 29 January 1985.
