Summary

A possible site of the medieval chapel of St Nicholas, although it is also possible that it may have been located on the site of St Peter's Church (NHER 6418). The chapel was in ruins in 1829 and there are 18th century references to the 'steeple' being used as a parish coal house. Material from the chapel may be incorporated into buildings on nearby Wyndham Street.

Map

Chapel of St Nicholas, in ruins in 1829.
(S1) says that in Wyndham Street are cottages with stone quoins, remains of a square headed doorway, and ecclesiastical fragments, made from this chapel. But other sources say it stood on the site of the parish church, and the Ordnance Survey apparently once marked a third site, though it does so no longer.
Information from (S2).

(S3) gives this site, but says in 1928 building was turned into a shop destroying most of the evidence.

(S4) noted 'a chapel built within the ruins of Good St Nicholas's'.

J.Lodey (NLA) states that there are 18th century references to the 'steeple' being used as a parish coal house.
E. Rose (NLA), 24 February 1998.
