Summary

In 1928-9 dredging of the River Wissey recovered Early Bronze Age pot sherds. Then in the 1930s a Roman quern and undated undated human skull were found nearby. Subsequently metal detecting in 1981 found a Roman military buckle plate and fieldwalking in 1984 recovered a sherd of Roman greyware.

1928-9. Dredgings of River Wissey both sides river near bridge.
Context 1: pottery, Beaker sherds (altered from '?Bronze Age' by R. R. Clarke), handmade, including part of a flat base of coarse hard greyish ware, unevenly fired, with blueish-grey surface, decorated with series of small shallow, roughly oval depressions irregularly over surface.
CUMAE ex CAS and T. H. Lethbridge (29.494). Noted in (S1) and (S2).

NHER 4724/context 2 on south side river in area centred TL 7140 9940.
Found with metal detector near lavatory in caravan park.
Fragment of Roman military Ae buckle plate with openwork decoration. Remains of one rivetted stud. Double loops diam 5mm with holes maximum diameter 2mm. Thickness of plate ranges between 0.7mm in openwork to 2mm around border. 2nd-3rd century AD.

Found in fieldwaking before bypass construction.
Sherd of Roman micaceous greyware.
No other finds from this area, and no evidence of any features cut into chalk seen after stripping.
