Summary

A range of archaeological features and human remains have been observed at this site on several occasions between 1957 and 2003. Several Iron Age pits and undated gullies were recorded during salvage excavations in 1988 and 1995. Iron Age finds included at least one complete profiled vessel, other pottery fragments, a crucible, a loom weight, and bone. Finds from the ploughsoil at this time included box tile, painted wall plaster, and Roman pottery, suggesting the presence of a substantial Roman building as well as undated animal bone, slag, and waste silver. Burials have also been recorded on several occasions. At least one burial may have been associated with one or two round pits of presumed Iron Age date and two others may have been associated with Iron Age pottery, but the pottery has not been fully identified and could potentially be Roman.

Map

March 1957. Found in ploughing.
Pottery, probably Roman.
Note on (S1) by R.R. Clarke (NCM).

29 February 1988. Excavation.
At approximately same spot, but very hard to locate exactly as layout of farm and field completely changed since 1957 - see (S2).
R. Silvester (NAU) called in by farmer building new potato store. Topsoil and natural chalk excavated to depth of around 80 to 90cm. Base of pit revealed, 1.3m in diameter and 24cm deep, filled with dark brown soil with chalk lumps and beneath 11cm of greasy grey and brown silt. Finds recovered included Iron Age pottery (one complete profiled vessel and at least one other), bone and a crucible.
To south, three parallel gullies northwest to southeast, run whole width of new building around 15 to 20m or so, said by informant to be continuation of gullies 'seen by another NAU officer when store to west erected about ten years ago' (no record of this at NAU). Gullies revealed 1988 are in section, about 0.85cm wide and 0.3m deep into surface of natural and ploughsoil. Fill of brown soil, no obvious discoloured silt. No finds in section except one bone fragment.
See published article (S3) and report on analysis of crucible residues (S4).
R. Silvester (NAU), 1 March 1988. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 20 February 2014.

June 1995.
Further gullies revealed and Iron Age pits salvage excavated. Ploughsoil finds of a human skull, box tile, painted wall plaster, animal bone, slag, waste silver and Roman pottery, suggesting substantial building.
Iron Age pits with loomweight and pottery.
See list and (S2) in file. Also see photographs (S6) and unpublished document (S7)
D. Gurney (NLA) 21 June 1995. Amended by A. Beckham (HES), 27 July 2017.

27 June 1995.
Further features discovered and reported.
'Another skeleton and one or two round pits', presumable Iron Age (not seen).
D. Gurney (NLA), 5 July 1995.

World War Two crash previously recorded under this number is now NHER 45351.
M. Dennis (NLA), 22 June 2006.

March 2002. Casual Observation.
Further human remains were uncovered during farm work. The remains included a complete skeleton, minus the skull and the skull from another individual. The author of (S7) reports that Iron Age pottery was observed near to the burials.
The remains were reburied on the site.
See unpublished document (S7).
A. Beckham (HES), 27 July 2017.

11 July 2003. Casual Observation.
Further human remains were uncovered during farm work. No details of the remains are known as they were heavily disturbed by the tractor. The author of (S7) reports that Iron Age pottery was observed near to the remains. It is uncertain whether the 4 Roman pottery sherds handed to HES are the 'Iron Age' sherds observed. Identified by A. Rogerson (HES), 17 July 2017.
The finds were deposited with Norwich Castle Museum in July 2017.
See unpublished document (S7).
A. Beckham (HES), 27 July 2017.
