FINDS IN THE NORWICH CASTLE MUSEUM
A prehistoric quartzite pebble macehead with an hour glass perforation was found here during the 19th century. This find is noted in (S1) and is listed in a 1909 museum catalogue (S2) (although it cannot be identified in the current museum records). Information from (S3). These objects are not closely datable, the simpler forms such as this example (with a hole created by pecking rather than drilling) having been found in both Mesolithic and later prehistoric context. This find is almost certainly one of the two unprovenanced pebble maceheads from Sporle listed by (S4) as being held by the NCM. See also (S5). Previously recorded as NHER 11972.

FINDS IN OTHER MUSEUMS

Spalding Museum.
This museums holds a flint axe of Danish type with polished cutting edge, recorded as being found in the Sporle area in 1899. Possibly a copy of a bronze axe?. Part of the A. C. Savin Collection (no.70). Probably the discovery referred to in (S6). See also (S7). Information from (S8) (which has a rough sketch of this object).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 5 June 2013.
