Summary

The cropmark of a ring ditch is visible on aerial photographs and this may relate to a Bronze Age round barrow site. The monument forms part of a possible linear barrow group, see NHER 1020, NHER 12787 and NHER 12789, running alongside the former course of the River Burn. The linear group may be focused on the larger and potentially earlier hengiform monument to the east, see NHER 1020. Possible internal pits are visible and these may relate to grave cuts.

The cropmark of a ring ditch is visible on aerial photographs (S1) and (S2) and this may relate to a Bronze Age round barrow site. The monument forms part of a possible linear barrow group (NHER 1020, 12787, 12789) running alongside the former course of the River Burn. The linear group may be focused on the larger and potentially earlier hengiform monument to the east (NHER 1020).
The ring ditch measures 28.5m in diameter and the width of the ditch varies from is 1m to 2.5m.
Two oblong pits have been mapped within the interior, although it is highly possible that these are of geological origin, as the area is dotted with gravel pockets and bands.
However, due to their apparent positioning within the ring ditch, these were plotted, as they may represent grave interment pits.
One is located at TF 8402 4216 and is approximately 7m by 4m and the second at TF 8402 4214, measuring 6.5m by 3m.
S. Massey (NMP), 2 October 2002.
