Summary

This brick and flint butterfly-shaped building was built by Edward Maufe for Sir Henri Deterding, chairman of Royal Dutch Petroleum and Shell, in the early 20th century. Built in Arts and Crafts style most of the materials are local although some of the bricks were imported from Holland by barge and traction engine. In the gardens are two pavilions with pyramidal roofs and a small bridge. These were also designed by Maufe.
