Summary

A former school house of 1858, of red brick with a tiled roof. Two storeys high with attics, it consists of a central block with cross wings to the north and south. On the south side is a projecting two storey porch with an arched dooway, over which is a panel with a coat of arms dated 1562.

Site of manor house of Holt Pereer a mansion of about 1330. Demolished in 1553 to build school, replaced by present school house in 1858, (S1).

Listing Description:
School House.
1858, by Suter, architect to the Fishmongers. Red brick, steep plain-tiled roof. Two storeys and attic. Central block with two cross-wings to north and south. Timber casements with mullions, transoms and glazing bars. Cambered brick arches over wind openings. Continuous brick drip mould over first floor window openings. Two-storey bay window in west wall of north wing with hipped roof. Projecting two-storey porch on south side with two-centred arched doorway with stone surround, surmounted by panel with coat of arms and date of 1562. Parapetted gables to wings. Three 'wedge' dormers on west side of main block. Brick chimney stacks, one diagonally-set on south side. Built on the site of Sir Thomas Gresham's former manor house. Included for townscape value.

However reference (S3) states that the school was founded in 1555, not 1553, in a 'building attached to the old family home', not that the house was demolished. This reference is more concerned with family history and may on the architectural side be less reliable than (S1), though (S1) does contain some major inaccuracies for other sites.
