Map

'Old Windmill' marked on (S1).
Building still shown, but not named, on current Ordnance Survey.
E. Rose (NAU), 21 November 1979.

On (S2).
Post mill. Last used 1883. Stripped out in 1887. Information from [1].
E. Rose (NAU), 22 March 1982.

This mill appears on the first edition 6 inch Ordnance Survey map surveyed and published in 1884 (S3). By the time of the second edition 6-inch map of 1904 it is marked as 'Old windmill' (S4).
(S5) notes that Fairstead post mill stood just to the east of Fairstead Farm and in the 1700s was standing on the south side of Gaywood Common. A horse mill was also worked on the premises. The mill had possibly ceased to work around 1886 as the internal machinery was advertised for sale in early 1887. However, it could well be that the machinery did not sell and the mill continued working for some years.
The complex also included a Mill House.
It is unclear when the mill and associated buildings were demolished. No traces of the mill or mill house are visible on current Ordnance Survey maps and the site is now occupied by modern sheltered housing.
A. Cattermole (King's Lynn UAD), 14 May 2019.
