Summary

A predominantly late medieval church, St Mary's underwent significant restoration in the 19th century. Inside, a splendid stained glass window in the south aisle depicts a host of angels and dates from the 20th century, and the remains of a 15th century roodscreen can be seen. Outside, the great church tower rises above the gentle valleys of northeast Norfolk.

Listing Description excerpt:
"Parish church. Medieval. Flint with stone dressings. Tile and lead roofs. West tower, nave, north and south aisles, south porch, chancel, vestry. Embattled tower of four stages, its building mentioned in wills, 1475-1487. Diagonal buttresses. Flushwork base. West doorway with chamfered reveal, arch with rolls and hollows with fillets; encircled quatrefoils in the spandrels. Frieze over, with crowned Ms and IHSs on panels alternating with knapped flint...Square ringing chamber openings with cusped quatrefoil tracery; hood moulds. Three-light bell openings with panel tracery. Gargoyles. Battlements mentioned in wills of 1523 and 1526 again with crowned Ms and IHSs; finals with crockets. Stair turret to south east corner with quatrefoil lights. Nave of four bays...Buttressed chancel has 19th-century vestry to north...Medieval arch-braced porch roof. Doorway to nave with roll and fillet moulding; hood mould. Door with 14th-century ironwork cross and hinges.
Interior: 14th-century four-bay arcade of octagonal shafts, bases and abaci, arch with two chamfered orders. Nave roof greatly restored in 19th century; wall posts with polygonal bases and abaci on embattled corbels, longitudinal braces; traceried ashlaring. Arch-braced aisle roofs restored in 19th century. Large tower arch the full width of the tower has shafts with rolls in the angles, polygonal bases and abaci; inner order of arch on corbels possibly 19th century. Cusped piscina in south aisle. Stoup beside south door. Chancel arch with polygonal shafts and two chamfered orders. 19th-century arcade in north chancel wall. Small brick aumbrey. Large splays to lancets. 19th-century roof. Some re-used poppy-head bench ends, some box pews. Restored Medieval screen with paint removed, upper parts renewed. 18th-century pulpit. Arms of George III. Much restored 14th-century font with endircled quatrefoils on bowl."

Some Norman and Early English work but mostly late 14th century and late 15th centuries. Perpendicular style roodscreen.
18th-century floor tombs. Gallas-plougn of 1860 from local foundry. Royal arms George III, perhaps altered from Charles II. Late 17th-cent
bellframe apparently removed in 1937, made into furniture and sold to USA.
Chalice, Norwich 1567; paten-cover, 1567 but remade.

From flowerbeds within St Mary's churchyard:
2 medieval pottery sherds.
3 post-medieval pottery sherds and fragment of clay tobacco pipe.
These finds were donated to Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1998.358).
