Summary

A post medieval pottery vessel was dug up under some old building foundations in 1970. It was probably a witch bottle, placed there to ward off evil spirits.

1970. Hill Farm; Gulgate Farm.
Witch bottle? (Bellarmine) and contents! Dug up on farm under old foundations. There was another but not seen. No mask on bottle. ?17th century. Brown glaze starts just about half way on bottle; handle broken off. Contents NCM (only rust flakes unable to get out rest) (NCM 409.971).
