Full Description
November 1959. Listed, Grade II.
See (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 27 October 2022.
September 1980. Field Observation.
Visited by E. Rose (NAU).
Large H-shaped building of brick in early 17th century style. Stepped gables on wings. However all exterior details are 19th century, except apparently for the central group of four octagonal chimneys, and pairs of circular windows in the west facing gables. The latter not usually found in Victorian imitations. Is this therefore a Jacobean house mostly restored in 19th century, or a very good imitation perhaps reusing some old work?
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU) 3 September 1980. Information from record card (S2).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 28 November 2022.
Listing (S1) notes a timber frame, suggesting basically original 17th century.
E. Rose (NAU) 10 February 1986. Information from record card (S2).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 28 November 2022.
Press cutting (S3) in file.
December 2003. Building Survey.
Detailed inspection of building shows that south crosswing contains a medieval timber framed wall unrelated to the remainder of the present house. This wing may have been extended to form a larger building, which predated the present main block. That in turn has a timber frame which may predate the early 17th century stack and ceiling beams which transformed it into a lobby entrance plan. The crosswing was partly rebuilt at this time. Some evidence of Regency-Gothic recasing before the building was extended and remodelled around 1900.
See report (S4) in file.
E. Rose (NLA) 13 December 2003.
Excerpt of current Listing Description:
House. 17th century and later. Rendered timber frame with colour-washed brick gable-ends. Plaintiled roofs. 'E'-plan with northern wing and two-storey porch, late 19th-century additions. Two storeys with attic. Seven bays of 19th-century three-light mullion (above) and mullion and transom (below) windows with rectangular hood-moulds. Three gabled dormers. A pair of small oval windows in each side-wing gable-end (original to south only). Elaborate moulded gable corbels and crow-stepped gables. One central axial stack, one 19th-century off-centre axial stack and one gable-end stack to south side-wing, all with octagonal shafts. Later extensions to front and side."
