Summary

A clinker-built wooden ship was found 4.5 metres below the surface during pipe laying in 1886. It was reported that a piece of the ship brought to the surface turned to dust when it dried, but that the iron nails in it were in mint condition. The ship was re-exposed in 1911, when it was declared to be a Viking type vessel.

Map

'In 1886 while laying drain pipes in King Street, Yarmouth. The workmen found a clinker built ship lying on a bed of sand and seaweed, at a depth of 4.5m (15ft) from the road surface. A piece of her side brought to the surface fell to powder when it dried, but the iron clench nails were almost perfect, and of most beautiful clean metal . G. Waller'.

Re-exposed 1911. Stern just under building on northeast corner King Street/St. Peter's Street. Bow to southwest. 'Almost certainly a Viking type ship of Anglo Danish or Norman times'. (S1).
E. Rose (NAU).

Pipe laying across site in 1994 did not reach to a great depth to re expose the timbers, but it was noted that there were brick culverts below this level, presumably those laid in 1911 or 1886.
See report under NHER 30081.
