Summary

Fieldwalking in 1984 by the Fenland Survey recovered a few sherds of Middle Saxon to medieval pottery all over this field, as well as a notable scatter in the northern part behind the orchard. Three concentrations of medieval objects, including a very small number of Middle and Late Saxon pottery sherds, were also noted, as well as evidence of at least one roddon.

1 March 1984. Fenland Fieldwalking. Several combined fields; ploughed area only walked.
Context 1: Odd sherds of medieval pottery all over field, a notable scatter in north part behind orchard but not sufficient to constitute a separate context. Also one Late Saxon sherd, and some Middle Saxon material.
Context 2: at 5165 1729. Concentration medieval pot, moderate abundance. Sparse post medieval; sparse fired clay; sparse to moderate shell, mainly cockles with odd oyster, and sparse bone. On top and sides of roddon. Well weathered soil. 50 x 34m. Also two Late Saxon sherds,
Context 3: at 5181 1715. Small concentration medieval pot, sherd abundance sparse to medium. Shell quite frequent. A rodham around 100m ?wide but on flat ground More bone than on most sites. Odd fragment fired clay but no real post medieval component. 20 x 20m. Some material reidentified as Middle Saxon.
Context 4: at 5195 1697. Small concentration medieval pot, sparse shell and bone, only odd fired clay fragment and post medieval material. Not on roddon. 33 x 17m. Also one Late Saxon sherd.
