Summary

The cropmarks of a ring ditch, potentially a Bronze Age round barrow, and ovoid/sub-circular enclosure are visible on aerial photographs. The features consist of a very large circular feature and a small, well-defined circular feature immediately to its east. The features were both initially described as ring ditches likely dated to the Bronze Age. However, it is possible that the larger sub-circular enclosure represents a Neolithic mortuary enclosure, Bronze Age funerary monument, or prehistoric settlement enclosure. However it could equally be the remains of a former plantation boundary, or connected to the 20th century military activity centred immediately to the west (NHER 54560). In addition to the circular cropmarks a number of undated linear and rectilinear cropmarks are visible.

Map

Two circular features are visible as cropmarks within the southern portion of this field on a variety of aerial photographs.
The features were originally identified in a 1961 image taken by J.K. St Joseph (S1, S2), and this remains the best image of both features. These consist of a very large circular feature located towards the western side of the field and a small, well-defined circular feature immediately to the east. The features were both initially described as ring ditches (S1) likely dating to the Bronze Age. It is possible that the larger feature could in fact be the remains of a former plantation boundary, although no plantations are depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of the area (S3). It is also possible that the features could be connected to military activity centered immediately to the west (NHER 54560).
One of the ring ditches appears within 1967 Ordnance Survey photography (S4). The smaller feature is also visible in several Google Earth images (S5, S6, S7, S8), but the larger feature is only visible in a 2006 image (S6).

The cropmarks of this ring ditch and ovoid/sub-circular enclosure are visible on aerial photographs (S2, S5-S7, S9). The ring ditch is likely to represent the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow. The larger enclosure may be a mortuary enclosure or similar monument. Other rectilinear ditches and possible enclosures may be visible as cropmarks, although the periglacial striped cropmarks make confident identification of the archaeological features hard. In addition to the circular cropmarks a series of rectilinear and linear cropmarks are visible within the central and northern part of the field in 1961 (S2, S9). Only a proportion of these have been mapped as it was felt that most were likely to relate to relatively recent activity, probably agricultural or military in nature. But this is not certain and they may represent archaeology, although the marks are much more ephemeral than the enclosures, which show on several years of photography. The site boundary has been extended to include the location of these features [1]. However, the former mapped extent of the ring ditch and sub-circular enclosure have been preserved as Context 1.
S. Horlock (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 21 February 2018.

November 2018. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
There is potential for the large enclosure to represent a prehistoric (possibly Bronze Age) settlement enclosure.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 2 November 2018.
