Full Description
Ring ditch on (S1) at this very approximate grid reference.
Accurately located from (S2) at this NGR.
October 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks and soilmarks of two Bronze Age round barrows are visible on aerial photographs to the west of Sparhamhole Plantation, Bylaugh (S2)-(S3). The site is centred on TG 0501 1890. The cropmarks, soilmarks and possible earthworks of other Bronze Age round barrows have been recorded in close proximity to the site, forming a small Bronze Age round barrow cemetery (NHER 50639). The barrow cemetery is located on the valley side overlooking the River Wensum. These two barrows are located on the break of slope at the top of the valley.
The clearest barrow is the westernmost example at TG 0497 1888, visible as a circular soilmark, 19m in diameter, in 1946 (S3). In 1959 a central pit and outer ditch around the eastern side of the former mound is visible (S2). The easternmost barrow, at TG 0504 1890, is visible as a circular parchmark, 18m in diameter (S3). No definite traces of an associated ring ditch can detected on the aerial photographs.
S. Massey (NMP), 22 October 2007.
