Map

17 April 1978.Visited.
Large early 18th century house, but south gable wall of 17th century chequered brickwork with traces of old windows and door remains of older house.
Main room interior has good double arch screen.
In cellars brick wine bins, meat room with hooks and flue to chimney upstairs - for smoking oven? Unusual.
Also cistern; originally completely bricked up,about 2m x 2.5m, 2.5m to apex of barrel vaulted brick ceiling; in corner of this a pipe connected to downpipes from roof emerges above a corner walled off by a cross-wall, at foot of which is a sort of brick trough - apparently a filter, water from roof passing behind wall and up through trough.
This could not have worked very well as floor of cistern is deep in old mud and lead-washings, also walls plastered in this to height of about 2m springer level) where two lead pipes lead off.
This must have been an emergency water supply as there is a well in the yard. (or for soft water?) Photograph in file.
In garden early pottery drain pipes with ridge along side have been dug up.
House under restoration.
E. Rose (NAU) .

(S1) says double pile - one pile early 19th, other early 18th. (S2) in file.
