Summary

A Bronze Age round barrow is recorded at this site. Blomefield noted a barrow close to the church, but there is no evidence of a barrow at this location, and it is likely that NHER 1780 is the barrow mentioned by Blomefield.

Location

Civil Parish HOLKHAM, NORTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

Large barrow stands on hill near church and churchyard.
Sources refer to this site and to NHER 1780, some confusion as to which refer to which site.
This one is probably 'Another tumulus by the church' mentioned in (S1). But see NHER 12585, this seems more likely to be the tumulus meant.
No sign of barrow at grid reference, and to north quarrying has taken place and only spoil mounds remain.
A.J. Lawson (NAU) February, 1975 and E. Rose (NAU) August 1982.

It seems fairly certain that these references are a confusion of Blomefield’s claim that the natural mound on which the church stands is artificial, and his reference to a barrow at a little distance which seems certainly to be NHER 1780. Some of them may refer to NHER 12585. But there seems no evidence on which to base the marking of a site actually on top of the church mound; this was probably a guess by R.R. Clarke (NCM).
E. Rose (NLA), 14 November 2005.
