Map

Farm at TG 187 068.

In (S1) Blomefield records that that the name 'Newfound' was a reference to "...a remarkable sort of earth newly found there, which was lately transported to Holland for the potters use…". Newfound Farm appears to have been established in the late 16th century and it is clear from later documentary sources that one or more potter was working here from at least the mid 17th century onwards.
See (S2) for a details summary of the available documentary evidence.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 25 November 2018.

Fieldwalking and a geophysical survey has identified a probable post-medieval kiln site to the south-west of Newfound Farm at c.TG 1799 0641 (NHER 9406) and another group of kilns has now been identified and excavated immediately to the west of the farm (NHER 63104). The limited trial trenching undertaken to date has however demonstrated that some of the other dipolar anomalies identified by an extensive 2011 geophysical survey and interpreted as kilns were actually large pits. These and various other large former quarries in the vicinity of Newfound Farm were probably originally clay pits associated with the pottery and brick/tile industries. These include the extant features still visible at TG 1806 0652 (NHER 9407) and TG 1829 0644 and a number of probably infilled pits identified by the geophysical survey. One of the latter corresponds with a scatter of post-medieval pottery observed in 1975 (NHER 9403).
