Full Description
Area marked as Earlham Grove on the 1st Edition O.S map. A large pit and a lime kiln are shown within this wooded area, adjacent to the Dereham Road (TG 200 094) - see NHER 25676 for further information on these features. This record was previously mapped as a point at TG 2005 0935 but has now been expanded to encompass the whole of Earlham Grove.
Pre 1926. Stray Find.
The Norwich Castle Museum holds a number of worked flints what were recovered by W. G. Clarke at "Earlham Grove" (NWHCM : 1926.32.14; Clarke's Site 14) - presumably this site. These are recorded as "undated prehistoric, possibly Mesolithic, flint implements."
P. Watkins (HES), 20 July 2014.
Pre 1960s. Stray Find.
Recovered by C. G. Rye from stone bed in Fortesquieu's Pits (presumably the pit adjacent to the limekiln):
"Worked flints".
Given as Neolithic on old Norwich card; although much of the material recorded as being from 'stone beds' is now though to be natural.
Information from old Norwich card via A. J. Walker, 12 April 1981.
Information from (S1).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 20 July 2014.
February 2007. Borehole survey.
Ground investigation on the site of the scout hut. It details the depth of made ground and gives a brief history of the chalk mines and lime kilns.
See (S2) and NHER 25676 for further details.
J. Allen (NLA), 1 June 2007.
