Summary

This early 16th century cottage has an inserted 17th century floor. The cottage has two bays and a rendered timber frame with thatched roof. A former five-light mullioned window exists in the north gable and an external chimneystack has been added to the other gable. The queenpost roof has one free-standing truss.

Listing Description:
Early 16th century cottage with inserted 17th century floor. Two bay rendered timber frame, thatched. Former five-light mullioned window in north gable. External chimneystack added to other gable. Queenpost roof with one free standing truss now closed with 17th century doorway.

Note: location of building obtained by process of elimination from other listed buildings; this is the last house in Brooke Road before it becomes The Street. Name Upgate Cottage is not known to the post office or local people; house marked on Ordnance Survey 6in as Barrackyard.

In fact Upgate Cottage is down a loke at the rear of the house marked
on old OS as The Barracks - now Kingsley Cottage.
