Full Description
Corner of Church Lane.
Tall (three storeys in north gable), timber framed. South gable in brick with triple-angled chimney, but not all brickwork is old. Extension here, 19th century. West gable oversails slightly. Probably 17th century. Poor condition.
Visited by E. Rose (NAU) 6 December 1978.
Norfolk Archaeology Research Group survey 1980 before restoration.
He believes the brick-clad extension may have been an original bay of the house with roof lowered.
Inside, large fireplaces on both main floors; the ground floor one has brickwork over, painted to resemble diaperwork, with a black-letter inscription on top of these.
Upper fireplace has plaster over painted to resemble brickwork.
South Norfolk District Council claim the house is a hall-house but there is no evidence for this, the claim seems to rest on the fact that two rooms open off the end of the large room containing the fireplace, which is more a descendant of hall-house form than anything else.
The house is listed as being of 1640 which would seem to fit these features, though Norfolk Archaeological Research Group informant believes it to be older.
